Acne comedonica

Acne comedonica is a form of acne characterised by frequent comedones, or blackheads. These blackheads disfigure your skin and are visible as white or black dots. The skin looks lumpy and irregular due to the presence of many sebum accumulations. Although the occurrence of inflammations cannot be ruled out, they are virtually non-existent in this form of acne.

However, blackheads can become inflammatory in the long run.

Treatments against Acne comedonica

The treatment of acne comedonica consists of the expert removal of the blackheads. Getting the sebum production under control and thinning the upper skin layer. Acne treatment is often combined with a chemical peel. Home products with exfoliating properties are also recommended to speed up the treatment process. Often only a few treatments are required for an effective treatment result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Acne comedonica

There are several types of blackheads:

  • Closed comedones – also called white heads. Characteristic of the white subcutaneous discolouration. These are mainly visible when the skin is tightened. In many cases, no sebum outlet is visible.
  • Open comedones – also called black heads. They are seen as black spots in the skin. This form of comedone occurs mainly in places where the skin structure is coarser.

There are multiple causes that can cause acne comedonica. The most common cause is an increase in sebum production.
Increased sebum production is usually due to an increase in the hormone testosterone.

We mostly see acne comedonica during puberty, but it can also occur during periods of hormonal imbalance.

Another cause is the accumulation of dead skin cells, which blocks the exit of a sebaceous gland. As a result, the sebum in the sebaceous gland accumulates and then becomes larger and larger.

The correct home treatment is of great importance. Often, aggressive skin care products are used, which further unbalances the skin. Blackheads can be very persistent, but are often easy to remove.
