Pigmented spots

What are pigmentation marks?

Pigmentation discolourations are abnormalities in the skin that can manifest as a dark or light discolouration of your normal skin tone. A dark discolouration of the skin is called hyperpigmentation. In hyperpigmentation, pigment has accumulated in the skin. Pigment spots come in all shapes and sizes and many people suffer from them.

Age spots are caused by overexposure to the sun. That is why they are usually on your face, your décolleté and your hands.

Wounds or infections, such as acne, can leave red to brown discolourations. This is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). It usually occurs in people with toned to dark skin who have (had) acne.

Café-au-lait spots are uniform pigment spots, which have the colour of coffee with milk. They are harmless pigmentation spots and are present from birth.

Melasma is also called pregnancy mask and has a hormonal cause. The spots often develop gradually due to a combination of sunlight and hormonal changes, such as taking the pill and going through a pregnancy.

Pigmented spots

The treatment for pigmentation spots is reimbursed from the supplementary insurance. Depending on your health insurance conditions, you may be reimbursed for this. Check the policy conditions to see if the treatment is (partly) reimbursed.

At Huidzorg West we offer various skin therapies for pigmentation spots. Depending on your complaint, we will choose a suitable treatment. During the initial consultation, we will discuss your symptoms and assess your skin. Then we come up with a tailor-made treatment plan.

  • IPL or pigment laser treatment: IPL or Huidzorg West has both the Nordlys from Ellipse, this is an IPL device, and a Gentle max Pro Alexandrite laser. The IPL or laser emits a pulse of the correct wavelength, which is absorbed by the pigment present. It is then heated, causing the body to break down the pigment. Such a short pulse may feel warm. We only treat the pigment spot, the surrounding skin is not affected.
  • peelings:A ‘chemical’ peel is an effective and simple way to improve the skin condition and provides a fresh look. It can be used well with light pigmentation.
  • camouflage therapy:Whether pigment spots can disappear completely depends on the type of pigment spots. If this does not work or if the result is insufficient, it is also possible to camouflage the skin. By using a special fixing product, the camouflage is resistant to water and smudging.|
  • fractional laser treatment:For deeper pigment lesions such as melasma, we use the Nordlys Fraxx Erbium Glass laser.
  • Toskani Spot out Kit plus: The SPOT OUT treatment is a treatment to remove hyperpigmentation, such as melasma. This treatment eliminates and reduces dark spots by inhibiting the melanogenesis process.
