Poikiloderma of Civatte is a lesion of the skin that often consists of pigment and blood vessels. In most cases, this benign skin condition occurs on the neck, cheeks and décolleté. Poikiloderma mainly affects white women over the age of forty. Men can also get this skin condition. Poikiloderma of Civatte is characterised by a red colour, as if someone has been slightly burned.
This is also called sun neck. On the side of the neck, you will see reddish-brown discolouration. Poikiloderma of Civatte is a combination of dilated vessels and pigmentation.
The IPL (light flash therapy) is the most effective treatment method at Poikiloderma. With the IPL treatment, both the dilated blood vessels and the pigment spots are treated.
As a rule, 2-4 treatments are required for a desired treatment result.
Prolonged and frequent exposure of the skin to sunlight is a major cause of Poikiloderma. This suspicion is confirmed by the fact that skin that is in the shade, such as the chin, is not affected. This skin condition often develops around the age of 40. Some other causes are hormone changes and skin ageing.
In addition to the treatments in the practice, the use of proper skin care is of great importance. Neoretin, Toskani and Neostrata products contain products that inhibit melanin (pigment), high percentages of retinol and antioxidants to improve hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone and regulate the activity of pigment cells. It is also important to use a sunscreen with a broad-spectrum filter.
At Huidzorg West, for example, we recommend the products of Heliocare. These mineral products have both a UVA and UVB filter, and also have a visible light and infrared light filter. These filters are of great importance for the prevention of new pigmentation spots.
