Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
Wounds or inflammations, such as acne, can leave red to brown discolourations. This is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation usually occurs in people who have suffered from acne. When superficial, these pigment spots are light to dark brown. A post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can also have a deeper component, and then the colour tends towards grey-brown.
