Types Acne scarring

In addition to the scars, we often see other residual symptoms of acne, such as redness and dark spots. There are different forms of acne scars:

  • Scar tissue:

Acne scars are skin damage caused by acne. This can manifest itself in scar tissue in the skin. Characteristics of this are ‘dimples’ in your skin.

  • Red Spots – Post-Inflammatory Redness:

After the acne inflammations have disappeared, red spots remain visible for 3 to 9 months in the places where the inflammations were located.

  • Dark Spots – Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation:

The dark spots can occur when exposed to sunlight. This pigmentation, also known as hyperpigmentation or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, occurs mainly in pigment-sensitive skin types.

Frequently Asked Questions

Acne scarring

The cause of acne scars is usually related to the severity and course of the acne. The more severe and the longer inflammations have occurred, the greater the risk of acne scars.

These inflammations lead to damage not only to the sebaceous gland but also to other important skin structures such as collagen, elastin, connective tissue fibres and blood vessels. It is important to treat active acne in order to prevent as many acne scars as possible. Huidzorg West can treat active acne through acne therapy.

For acne scars, a chemical peel is often used. An example of an effective peel is a TCA peel. This peeling improves the superficial skin structures and flattens acne scars. This method is often combined in a treatment process with the fractional laser.

Huidzorg West effectively treats acne scars with a fractionated laser. This method is mainly used to reduce the appearance of scars. This can be done for atrophic acne scars as well as hypertrophic acne scars. In addition to improving the skin’s structure, it also reduces any red and dark skin discolouration.

Inflammations caused by acne often lead to vascular abnormalities that disfigure your face or décolleté. Disfiguring veins on your body can be reduced or eliminated entirely by means of the Nordlys Ellipse IPL treatment and Gentle Max Pro Vascular Laser. The IPL treatment is a very effective method for residual acne and redness.

Pigmentation spots caused by acne are treated by us with the IPL or pigment laser treatment. They are safely and effectively removed, and you regain your even skin tone.

This is a treatment method that mechanically removes the upper layers of the skin. Abrasion literally means “grinding off” or ” sanding down”. This replaces old skin cells with new ones. The production of new connective tissue cells is also stimulated, so that the skin can look fresher and smoother. Microdermabrasion treatment is often combined with chemical peeling or fractional laser for the best possible treatment result.

Prevention is better than cure. If you still suffer from active acne (residual). Our advice is to treat the acne first. This is possible at Huidzorg West by means of acne therapy. In addition to the treatments in our practice, good home care is important. It also prevents new acne and acne scars.

Depending on the skin type, there are various therapeutic skin care products that can be used to balance the skin but also to promote the process of reducing acne scars. At Huidzorg West we are happy to give you appropriate skin advice.

In many cases, acne scars are atrophic scars.

There are different forms of atrophic acne scars:

  • Icepick scars: These are pointed (V-shaped) and deeper scars or pits in the skin. 60-70% of acne scars are ice pick scars.
  • Rolling scars: These are larger superficial scars. These scars are often 3 to 4 mm in size.
  • Boxcar scars: These scars are characterised by a round or oval scar with a sharp, distinct edge.

In addition to the atrophic scars, an acne scar can also manifest itself as:
