Improved use of legs and arms

Pneumatic Compression Therapy

A swollen body part can be very annoying and painful. It is important that the swelling is reduced as soon as possible in order to avoid the risk of infection (erysipelas). Pneumatic compression therapy allows appropriate pressure to be applied to the body part both in practice and at home.

What does the treatment involve?

Pneumatic Compression Therapy

Pneumatic compression therapy falls under integral oedema therapy. This therapy is used alongside other treatment methods to loosen and reduce oedematous tissue.

By means of an arm or leg cuff, the affected part of the body is treated. The cuff is divided into several ‘chambers’; these chambers are inflated one by one and thus deliver predetermined pressure to the affected body part. This helps to imitate manual lymph drainage or to prepare the oedema for further therapies applied in integral oedema therapy.

The treatment

Step 11

The affected body part is placed in the cuff and the cuff is zipped shut in the process

Step 22

The therapist determines the position, pressure and time required to effectively treat the affected body part

Step 33

The therapist will also apply other integral oedema therapy techniques

Frequently Asked Questions

Pneumatic Compression Therapy

Pneumatic compression therapy is applied as part of integral oedema therapy. Oedema therapy treatments are subject to a specific regulation. Every health insurance company has a fixed rate for these therapies.

In case of a chronic condition, the first 20 treatments are covered by the additional package; from the 21st treatment, the treatments are covered by the basic health insurance.

If there is no supplementary insurance, the first 20 treatments are at your own expense, after which a claim can be made under the basic insurance.

Should you have already made a claim on your supplementary package or have used up the maximum number of treatments, because you have had other therapies (physio, exercise) for example, the oedema therapy may also be at your own expense. We recommend that you contact your health insurance company as a matter of course.

The treatment is not considered to be painful. Inflation of the compartments in the cuff causes pressure on the affected body part, but is often experienced as pleasant.

Sometimes the therapist chooses to use this treatment method at someone’s home. Whether this is possible depends on several aspects and will always be discussed with the skin therapist.

Pneumatic compression therapy is often used to treat lymphatic and/or lipoedema symptoms.
