Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic and non-contagious skin condition. Anyone who has this condition finds it very disturbing. Rosacea is characterised by bright red discolouration, especially on the cheeks and nose. Other complaints with rosacea are nodules, pimples and visible blood vessels (the telangiectasias).

Rosacea has an unpredictable character, sometimes it flares up for a short time and then disappears again. It usually starts after the age of thirty, but is also seen in people in their twenties.

Types Rosacea

Stage 1

There is visible redness, especially on the cheeks. At the same time, thin vessels begin to form that do not disappear. In the first stage, your skin also reacts strongly to changes in temperature and it tingles painfully after washing.

Stage 2

During the second stage, red bumps and pimples develop, especially on your cheeks, chin and nose. In addition to the small, dilated vessels from the first stage, thicker vessels are now also appearing, and your skin is becoming increasingly sensitive. Pores also become larger and therefore more visible.

Stage 3

During the third and final stage of rosacea, increasingly large blisters containing pus (pustules) form on the skin and can even change the contour of your face. In addition, the skin can thicken in places. We call this rhinophyma.

Treatments against Rosacea

At Huidzorg West we counteract the most disturbing symptoms, such as redness, rosacea and the development of inflammation. We can treat the symptoms in different ways, or offer you a combination of therapies.

In the initial consultation, we discuss your symptoms and assess your skin. Then the skin therapist will discuss a tailor-made treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rosacea

The cause of rosacea is not unknown. But there are various theories about its origin.

The blood vessels in the face are thought to be abnormally dilated due to increased blood flow from the facial skin and/or due to an altered response pattern of the blood vessels to stimuli from within and without. This causes the blood to stop, which triggers an inflammatory reaction, resulting in redness, swelling, bumps and pustules.

A change in the skin environment can also be the cause. For example, as a result of the changed skin environment, the “Demodex” mite could be a cause. This mite, which lives naturally in the sebaceous gland, does not normally cause any problems, but in rosacea the “Demodex” mite is present in large numbers and can exacerbate or maintain the inflammatory reaction.

In addition to these factors, there are a number of other factors that may affect rosacea. These include:

  1. Nutrition
  2. Alcohol
  3. Medicines
  4. Temperature changes
  5. UV radiation
  6. Aggressive skin care products
  7. Stress
  8. Hormones

The right home treatment is of great importance. When the skin is inflamed by rosacea, the GP or dermatologist sometimes prescribes local or oral antibiotics. In addition to these medications, the Huidzorg West skin therapist supports the GP or dermatologist in giving skin care advice and carrying out acne therapy treatments.

Huidzorg West has many contacts with GPs in Delft and Rijswijk and is a collaborative partner of the Dermatology Clinic of the Reinier de Graaf Hospital. With this unique partnership, the Huidzorg West skin therapist can draw up a personal treatment plan together with the GP or dermatologist who treated the patient.

Often, aggressive skin care products are used, which further unbalances the skin. At Huidzorg West we advise skin care products that balance the skin first. We go back to basics and guide you through this process.

Once the skin is balanced, the skin therapist considers whether additional skin care is required to reduce and stabilise the rosacea. At Huidzorg West we are happy to give you appropriate skin advice. If you want to start with skin care products, take the skin quiz.
